Letter to the Public
January 10-26th
Opening reception January 10th, 6-9pm
Five years ago after the new years, we asked several artists to sit down with someone for dinner, record what they ate, and make a written prediction for the coming year. Every January since, we have continued collecting predictions, publishing them in free booklets. Last year we explored how the predictions were documented by focusing on the act of listening with an exhibition called Sound Affect, which converted the Icebox into a recording studio.
This coming year’s exhibition Letter to the Public will focus on the intersection of language, text, and sound. A 50 foot ramp puts a single audience member in the middle of the Icebox, and in front of a microphone transcribing every word spoken into a real-time projection. Every word becomes pixels of light in a darkened room as the audience below matches sound to text. Letters to the Public will be open to the public for the month of January, recorded, and shared.
