Event Navigation

Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) invited all MFA members residing in the United States, DC, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico to enter the 2022 Winter Member Show. All original 2D or 3D work created was considered. The selected works will be on display at MFA’s Circle Gallery from January 5 to 22, 2022.

Juror: Gerald Ross, Director of Exhibitions, Curator, and Adjunct Faculty at Maryland Institute College of Art

Ross received a degree in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1989, where he was also a Yale scholar. In the 1990s he collaborated on six public mural projects, receiving numerous awards. Ross continues to peruse his studio art and shows regularly in the region. He has also served as a juror for many fine art awards, including the Trawick Prize and the National Sculpture Residency Prize at Evergreen House. As Director of the Exhibitions Department at MICA, Gerald manages a diverse, energetic and vital program – installing over 100 exhibitions per year, campus-wide. Since 2003, he has curated exhibitions, established public programming, and has worked with the community to bring a large variety of local, national, and international groups and artists to MICA

Juror’s Statement

While art-making can be approached in many ways and expression can take many forms – and speak to many specific audiences and cultures, it often comes from a personal and intimate space. As I look over the works I selected for this exhibition, I am astonished by the sheer talent. There are moments of spacious wonder, glimpses of family and home and a bit of first-rate chuckling too. Almost without exception, I see a collection of personal interactions that are often quiet, humble, and all of them earnest.

As a painter myself, perhaps I’m instinctively drawn to works that seem to be connected to something exclusive and solitary. Artists have been working, sheltered, with the rest of society for the past nearly two years. Humanity is grappling with a world that is changing and perhaps resetting. What I find uplifting about this exhibition of works is that there is still so much beautiful poetry in the world and so many souls connecting to it. Even better is these artists’ desire to share it with us.
