Opening Reception: October 13 | 6 – 8 PM
Fairmount Park Conservancy presents: Meadow Mansions: Designing Homes for Fairmount Park’s Winged Residents.
Thanks to their grant from ArtPlace America, the Conservancy is incorporating more arts and culture into its mission to support and improve Philly’s parks. One such example is commissioning designers and artists to create structures that will help attract birds to the meadows of Fairmount Park. Part of this year’s DesignPhiladelphia festival, the theme of which is “home,” the birdhouses will be exhibited inside the historic Mount Pleasant mansion for a two-week period. The exhibition includes fanciful projections and the sound of meadow bird species.
After the exhibition, these one-of-a-kind birdhouses will be installed in Philadelphia parkland to entice nesting species and serve as signposts reminding park visitors that meadows are diverse ecosystems right in the city’s midst.
The opening reception for Meadow Mansions will take place on Thursday, October 13 from 6 – 8 PM and will provide an opportunity to view the birdhouses and mingle with the artists. Upcoming Meadow Mansions events include a panel of artists moderated by Roberta Fallon of ArtBlog and a bird walk with Keith Russell of Audubon Pennsylvania—which is set to make its new home in East Fairmount Park when its Discovery Center with Outward Bound opens in 2018.
