Mel Chin is internationally regarded as the political consciousness of the art world. For over forty years, the context of his work – ranging from toxic landfills to prime time television – is consistently rooted in provoking social awareness and civic responsibility. As such, Chin will deliver the keynote for Visualizing Sustainability, addressing his illustrious career while focusing on projects such as Revival Field and Operation Paydirt/Fundred Dollar Bill Project, which represents hundreds of thousands of individuals united against lead poisoning. It is not about making any one city lead-safe, rather it is a national project that has been deployed in many cities to help make them, and the whole country, lead-safe.

This series is co-curated by Temple Contemporary, Temple University’s Office of Sustainability, and Temple University Libraries, along with faculty and graduate students from the Tyler School of Art, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Center for the Cinematic and Performing Arts. Additional support for this event providedby Tyler school of Art Department of Planning and Community Design, Painting, Drawing and Sculpture, Art Education and Community Arts Practice and Graphic and Interactive Design.
