The Monmouth Museum proudly celebrates the 133-year history of The National Association of Women Artists (NAWA), the oldest continuing professional organization of practicing women artists in the United States. Established in 1889, NAWA has a unique historical presence, as it was founded by five women artists to provide women opportunities to exhibit their work during a period when women faced great difficulty to display their art publicly. Originally founded as the Woman’s Art Club, the organization provided women with an alternative to organizations that restricted women from participating in life anatomy art classes as well as exhibiting their art.

The exhibition, The National Association of Women Artists: Then and Now, demonstrates the continuing presence of this organization with 65 works of art: a selection of 15 works, dating between 1915 and 1980, from the Zimmerli Art Museum’s The National Association of Women Artists’ Collection at Rutgers (established in 1988), in addition to 50 works of art selected from more than 260 submissions by NAWA member artists nationwide, representing the contemporary part of the exhibition.

Juried by three curators: Donna Gustafson (Curator of Modern and American Art at the Zimmerli Art Museum); Marianne Ficarra (representing the Monmouth Museum, and currently a professional fine art appraiser, with experience in both curating and judging NAWA exhibitions); and Jeffrey Wechsler (retired Senior Curator at the Zimmerli Art Museum, who worked directly with the NAWA collection and curated many NAWA exhibitions, both at Rutgers, and other venues). Both the historical and contemporary sections of this NAWA exhibition, feature a wide diversity of media, including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and innovative mixed media works of art.

The NAWA exhibition at the Monmouth Museum indicates the diversity and talent of the current members of NAWA, while acknowledging and celebrating the venerable and groundbreaking historical contributions of the organization.
