Only Echoes, Passing Through the Night is a multi-toned exhibition and silent communication from our common world. Echoes from three different continents join together in the exhibition, featuring fifteen artists from Europe, Asia, and North America using the common language of art to reflect diverse cultural backgrounds. The participating artists are Furen Dai (NY/China), Maija Helasvuo (FIN), Sampsa Indrén (FIN), Alisa Javits (FIN), Mika Karhu (FIN), Jia-Jen Lin (NY/Taiwan), Branislav Nikolic (Serbia), Yann Pocreau (NY/CAN), Niina Räty (FIN), Joakim Sederholm (FIN), Justin Orvis Steimer (NY/USA), Juha Sääski (FIN), Anssi Taulu (FIN), Anniina Vainionpää (FIN), and Andreas Wolf (Germany).
An echo is generated by the reflection of a signal from the interface of two substances, and was notably the name of NASA’s first communication satellite in the early 1960s. There is a Finnish saying: The forest answers in the same way one shouts at it, referring to the echo that the treeline produces. In English, the equivalent would be The world you get is the world you give away, or alternatively, What goes around comes around.
Active collaboration between the participating artists forms the foundation of this exhibition. Artist residencies have had a great impact on this international network of artists, which is based on friendship and trust. The artists would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to the Finnish Cultural Institute – New York, Finnish Cultural Foundation, Arts Promotion Centre – Finland, Art OMI – Ghent, NY, Jalovik Art Colony – Serbia, and Sculpture Space – Utica, NY for their support.
