Permutations is a collaborative installation by Philadelphia and New York area artists Anna Boothe and Nancy Cohen that that brings together glass, sculpture, and works on paper to evoke traditional Tibetan paintings on cloth known as thangka. Used as teaching tools and guides to meditation, thangka are composed of numerous colorful elements, each with their own symbolic meaning. Boothe and Cohen have reinterpreted the forms and symbolism of thangka paintings, creating amorphous organic shapes that appear almost sentient. For this exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Boothe and Cohen have enlarged their original project in response to the architectural details and natural light in the first floor galleries of the Wetherill Mansion.
