The variety of landscapes, light and moments took our breath away. All of the pent-up feelings of staying close to home the last couple of years were momentarily silenced as we were able to be transported to incredible places in the submitted work.
Nearly all of the images not only showed real technical expertise but also captured unique and unusual perspectives. It was no easy feat to choose this collection. We ended up categorizing by subject matter and finding the images that really stood out from the rest in each group.
As contemporary photographers and photo teachers, we constantly find ourselves drawn into minimal images that capture a fleeting moment in time (a single wave cresting in a sea of dark water) because we know how difficult those images can be to find and capture in a compelling way. In addition, we appreciate images that create a quiet place to rest your eyes by creating a sense of order in the untamable chaos of the natural world. We also love images that use scale, focus, etc. to create mysterious abstractions that make us pause for discovery.
While there were many other images that easily could’ve made the cut, we chose to select a collection that embodies the variety, magic and wholeness of what was submitted. A feast for the eyes and the senses through the incomparable beauty of the natural world.
