Event Navigation

Rachel Rotenberg utilizes wood and vines to create dynamic, organic, and heroic sculptures. Through them, we find our place in the world and connect to forces larger than ourselves. She sees them as metaphors for a plethora of relationships, muscular movements that are both mysterious and provocative. Rotenberg begins her creative process with pencil drawings. She states of the drawings and the resultant sculptures: “My drawings narrate my interior dialogue. I work the ideas until a leading image emerges, then I begin construction, cutting and laminating cedar lumber. I often return to my sketch book to solve issues that arise, I remain conscious of the dialogue between the two-dimensional drawing and the emerging sculpture. Both must be respected for the sculpture to reach its potential. Once the form is complete I apply texture and color to differentiate relationships and lead the viewers eye through the sculpture.”
