The pioneer of the art furniture movement and the mastermind of mixed-media and ceramic sculpture bring their work to The Delaware Contemporary, Wendell Castle and Nancy Jurs, the internationally recognized art couple famed for their innovative sculptures, will display early and recent works in wood, ceramics, and mixed media at The Delaware Contemporary beginning May 5 and continuing through August 6. The exhibition, Then and Now, will showcase their flawless grasp of art, design, and technology.
The museum is proud to welcome back this powerhouse couple from Scottsville, NY. Wendell Castle, considered the father of the art furniture movement, holds a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Design from the Brooklyn Museum of Art. His works are found in permanent collections, outdoor public spaces, and art museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Delaware Art Museum, as well the Smithsonian Institution. Nancy Jurs, known for integrating objets d’art into her masterful and innovative ceramic or mixed media ensembles, has works in permanent collections, outdoor public spaces, and museums, including the American Craft Museum, the Smithsonian, the Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY, the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, MN, and the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY.
 
Castle and Jurs’ international reputation stems not simply from their wood, ceramic, and mixed media sculptures housed around the globe, but for their subliminal whimsy and accumulated wisdom on art and design for over 50 years. Their craftsmanship and constant reinvention of what’s meaningful drive how their materials continue to inspire audiences.
