SOULS OF BLACK FOLK: Lavett Ballard

June 29, 2019 - September 1, 2019

Event Navigation

Opening Reception Second Friday, July 12
The use of fences in Lavett Ballard’s work is “a symbolic reference to how fences keep people in and out, just as racial and gender identities can do the same socially.”  Researching and compiling historic imagery of the African diaspora, she paints, destroys and rebuilds them, creating a visual narrative with collage. The works honor female self-identity in African American history.
