DVAA is proud to host South Street From the 80’s, a sculptural diorama exhibition by DVAA member Phoebe Murer. The artist questions the social, economic, and environmental effects of gentrification in this exhibition which depicts the famous South Street in an iteration of its previous existence – in the 80’s. In Murer’s words, “the way we waste resources is detrimental to our planet. Gentrification is not just detrimental to the environment but to our humanity. Instead of preserving neighborhoods, we raise the prices to unaffordable levels, leaving buildings and residents in limbo. We tear down old buildings and build “bigger and better” buildings. But are they really bigger and better?”

South Street From the 80’s is about preserving earlier memories of South Street and recycling. Murer remembers South Street as a place where punks and hippies would hang out. Murer says: “there were a ton of stores there; I remember I always bought my shoes at City Shoes, a shoe store for children on 5th and South. I remember going to the TLA to rent movies and going to Skinz with my brother. Now South Street is suffering from neglect. I have reinvented South Street from the 80’s with papier mache sculptures.”
