The gallery opening will be held this Friday, October 26th from 6-8 pm, with a spontaneous breakdance jam by artist Jaither West. Join the Arts League for festive drinks and fun neighborly hangs!
While creating “This is a Show for the People” the artist Jaither West visited and revisited areas of Philadelphia that are significant to his personal past or to his experience of the city. He created portraits of these locations in his signature style and infused them with those activities that he is passionate about – breakdancing, martial arts, and graffiti tagging.
The exhibition will feature new work by the artist and a performance in the form of a spontaneous breakdance jam.
About the artist:
Jaither West’s paintings engage with both homage and reportage. As an avid breakdancer, he pays tribute to the history of hip-hop for inspiration, painting the personalities of hip-hop’s golden era as well as current events and daily life. His work explores the urban experience and the activity and people who inhabit or pass through the city of Philadelphia. He paints to record memories and draw attention to important but often marginalized moments in history. West’s work is a way for him to experience history, communicate his passions and honor those whom he respects. Whether about breakdancing or historical figures, the paintings give him a platform to share his passions with the viewer. Each piece of information recorded in his paintings takes him down a new path of discovery and creates a visual record of his explorations.
Jaither West (b. 1988) is a self-taught painter living and working in Philadelphia. He has exhibited throughout the region including Art in City Hall, Savory Gallery, and Fleisher-Ollman Gallery, Philadelphia; and Gallery Aferro, Newark, NJ.
