Information is pleased to present a zone imagined + executed by Katherine Lam. With War Trap, Lam has fashioned a physical platform for issues largely unseen, but inherently spatial ~~ both temporally + geographically. Bicultural identity, alienation, American insurgence, trauma stratified and carried between generations : combining text, video, + installation, Lam approaches these issues in every sense as an artist. Unlike the documentarian, the academic, the geographer, the biologist, etc etc etc, she forms a narrative through identification, not veracity.
Taking a loaded event _the Vietnam War_ and decontextualizing it, Lam posits history as a relayed memory. An event felt, but not known ; felt through inherited trauma, misremembered stories. A discursive site for speculation, War Trap meanders across zones ~~ between languages, nationalities, histories, and narratives ~~ without responsibility to ‘fact.’
KATHERINE LAM is an interdisciplinary artist based in Philadelphia, PA. Lam holds an MFA from the Tyler School of Art and a BFA from the University of North Texas in Denton. She has shown work in Temple Contemporary and Stella Elkins Gallery in Philadelphia, PA, Temple Rome Gallery in Rome, IT, Sunset Art Studios in Dallas, TX, and Brick Haus Collective in Denton, TX, where she also organized the 2016 exhibition Rhizome.
