Jennifer Baker is a painter and sculptor who has worked in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia since 1978. She attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) as well as the Art Students League in NY. Baker has shown her work at Art 101 and Pleiades Gallery in New York and Projects Gallery, Nexus Gallery, F.A.N. Gallery, and The Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia. She was selected for a Challenge Exhibit at Fleisher Art Memorial in 1997. Baker received a Leeway Foundation Art and Change Grant in 2010, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship for Works on Paper in 1993, and was a finalist for a Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 1997. In 2014, Baker curated an exhibit about the history of Northern Liberties for the Philadelphia History Museum. In 2015, Baker created “Portraits of People on the Move” – an exhibit of stories and photographs of Philadelphia area immigrants – as a companion exhibit to Silvana Cardell’s multimedia dance performance, “Supper, People on the Move.” This exhibit is currently in the lobby of the Wilma Theater through April 22nd. Many of the paintings and monoprints in “Work in Progress” at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral were recently exhibited at Art 101 in Brooklyn, NY. “Work in Progress” refers to the transformation of Northern Liberties that Baker has witnessed and documented over a period of 30 years, as well as her ongoing project to tell this story.
