Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Pia De Girolamo: Urb/Suburbs. This exhibition of acrylic paintings challenges conceptions of the ordinary by exploring the layers of beauty and history embedded in quiet scenes from everyday life. This series of paintings, developed over the last year features vignettes of urban architecture and bridges with a particular interest in contrasts between old and new constructions. These urban scenes are presented alongside quiet suburban moments – the other end of the artist’s familiar commute.

Of her process, the artist writes: “It is easier to absorb new images in novel places than at home when you are observing the same landscape on a daily basis. Nevertheless, I find it is possible and very rewarding to train the mind to be open to things I might not have noticed before.” To this end, De Girolamo highlights simple pleasures like the way pine trees look silhouetted against a bright sky or how the lines, bridges and ramps crisscross to create movement. Seen together, the exhibition offers a record of Philadelphia and its surroundings at a particular time highlighting unique features that might go unnoticed by many, but to those who pay attention are
what make this place feel like home.
