How did your passion for art originate?

I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I loved comics and used to draw my own on printer paper with my own characters and story lines. Whereas most kids like to go out and play, I would sit in my room for countless hours drawing muscle-bound guys beating the crap out of each other.

I understand you’ve done some work with Quirk Books. Can you tell me more about that?

I’ve illustrated five books for Quirk. Four of the Secret Lives series: Authors, Artists, Composers, & Filmmakers. I also did a series of pen & ink spots for a book called Geek Wisdom.

Do you feel that studying in Philly had any influence on your work creatively?

Definitely. There’s a real Philly aesthetic to the work that comes out of the illustration departments here. It’s more of a design-oriented approach to image making. Tyler, where I went to undergrad, especially focuses on concept-driven imagery.

Can you tell me about the work you will have for sale at Art for the Cash Poor 14?

Prints mostly. I believe in inexpensive art, so no limited edition or hand-pulled prints here. Just CMYK digital prints in three different sizes: 8×10, 5×7, and 4×6, packaged in a mylar sleeve with a backing board. If one of my images fits into one of those formats, I’ll print it up and sell it.

I also have a some original scratchboard illustrations and inked bristol boards. They’re usually slightly more expensive, as they’re original art. I have a few mini bearskin rugs too (made from faux fur and sculpey), and might have a few other odds & ends!

What are you looking forward to most about the event?

I really love interacting with the shoppers and the other vendors. I usually leave a craft fair with a new friend or two.

Do you have any other upcoming exhibitions?

In June I’ll be participating in a group show in Pittsburgh centered around action movie-themed art. The show is at a shop/gallery called Wildcard. July is my thesis exhibition at the University of Hartford, where I’m currently working toward my MFA in Illustration. If you find yourself in either of those cities this summer, you should swing by!

Sharing the experiences I have had with race and gender is a catalyst for my work. My experience growing up very protected in a race not completely my own, was not concerning to me as a child. When I was introduced to a mixed race population that was very concerned with labeling and grouping people, the experience was unsettling. From that point, I had to think about race and culture and how they related to my daily performance.

Ever since I could remember I was always attracted to people and places, but I was not always good with words or finding connection. Photography was my way of fitting in--my way to communicate the beauty I see around me. I’ve traveled the world documenting all types of subjects and experienced many extraordinary people and places.
