As the 2017 InLiquid Benefit approaches, we are excited to showcase the exclusive pieces to be sold at our silent auction. In preparation for our Main Event we encourage collectors, both seasoned and new, to celebrate art, community, and their city while supporting their local arts organizations, such as InLiquid.

If you have a love of nature and insects, then There is Love by PD Packard, may just worm its way into your heart at the Benefit. Having studied Entomology, PD Packard is an artist that works with a variety of mediums. She combines printmaking and embossing with watercolor painting and aniline dyes to capture the beauty of insects, using them as a form to express a narrative of unconditional love.

PD Packard is an artist that has traveled across the world. She was awarded with a scholarship from Central St Martins in London, where she obtained a combined degree in Textile Design and Fashion. After receiving her degree and returning to the United States, she worked in the cosmetic industry, in which she developed textiles and surface designs. With her experience in working with fabric and surface design, she took what she learned from these mediums and switched over to printmaking in 2009. Since then, she has exhibited her work in exhibitions throughout the United States and overseas in Japan, Spain, Amsterdam, and China.

My recent works are a break from the painterly images I have made in the past few years. In a search for something more deliberate I changed my painting method and style. It is an abstraction using crosshatching, a technique usually reserved for rendering form and depth I have created an abstract flat image more akin to topography verging on minimalism. The linear hatch marks are made on a matte gradiated background which focuses the viewer on the duality of surface and color. These works are a meditation on labor and time: of coming together and the borders that separate us. The marks are not only creating an aesthetic pattern they are literally the marking of art, and the work that has gone into the piece.

Through abstract geometric paintings, Philadelphia artist Melinda Steffy translates music into color patterns, exploring ideas of translation, information and data, and how music weaves throughout human experience. Melinda Steffy’s RUINATION DAY series (acrylic on wood panel) deconstructs folk and blues songs that reference the date April 14, which is when Lincoln was shot, the Titanic hit the iceberg, and the Black Sunday dust storm devastated the Midwest. Melinda Steffy’s BACH PROJECT series (watercolor on paper) converts classical music by J.S. Bach and Bela Bartok into grids and pie charts. Rather than hear one note after the other through time, the paintings show all of the notes and rhythms simultaneously on one visual plane.

Jennifer Baker is a visual artist working in varied media including: painting, monotype, sculpture, and installation. Her images of Northern Liberties document the changes in that Philadelphia neighborhood over a period of 30 years, from the fires and the wrecking balls of the 1980s and 90s to the runaway construction of the 2000s. Other images explore the central Pennsylvania town of Centralia where an underground fire has burned in a coal seam for over 50 years. These pieces have a roughness and immediacy in their execution that matches their subject matter. Her life size sculptures and installation pieces show another side of her interests, and most recently she has been working on a series of drawings documenting her life in the time of coronavirus. All of these pieces have in common an interest in narrative and a sense of place and memory.
