InLiquid’s Configuration & Architectonic Shift: A DesignPhiladelphia Closing Event at Park Towne Place

InLiquid and Park Towne Place Museum District Residences have collaborated to create a day of open-to-the-public exhibitions, art discussions, art-making, music, food-and-drink, and an exclusive boat tour along the Schuylkill River–all in celebration of Philadelphia’s arts and cultural community and its many contributors to the Parkway’s continuous evolution as a place to see and experience art. This event marks the conclusion of DesignPhiladelphia, an annual tradition which highlights the work of hundreds of local designers, architects, and creative professionals.

All to take place at the beautiful and historic Park Towne Place, the InLiquid exhibition Architectonic Shift will be open to the public: an exhibition of four distinct artists–Colleen Keefe, Kristin Schattenfield-Rein, Linda Brenner, and Margery Amdur–telling the story of changing landscapes and cityscapes through art objects, actions, drawings, and installation. The overarching theme is the transformation of time and place, as each work incorporates objects and imagery that are tied to a previous history. Altered from their original purpose by the artists’ varying processes, the works tell a new story.

The afternoon will culminate in a special reception for Configuration: Nicholas Kripal, a landmark exhibition, located in the newly open-to-the-public gallery of Park Towne’s North Tower, of the late ceramic artist–a monumental influence on countless students as a ceramics professor and chair of the Crafts Department at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art.

Outside on Park Towne Place’s Great Lawn is set to have several art-making activities, live DJ-ing, and Philly favorite food trucks.  Best of all, all the activities are open to the public. Here’s what’s in store:

Claymation Workshop, 1 – 3 pm, Park Towne Place’s Great Lawn: Guests will work with professionals from The Clay Studio to create and animate clay characters using the art of stop motion. After the event videos will be edited and posted to Youtube.

Pint Painting, 1 – 4 pm, Lawn: Participants will paint custom designs on take-home pint glasses. Materials will be provided and InLiquid member Scott Schultheis will lead the workshop.

Guest DJ Kevin Kong, 1 – 5 pm, Lawn: DJ Kong is a well versed multi-genre DJ with a strong connection to the dance floor. He’ll be cranking out tunes for the festivities on the lawn all afternoon.

Philadelphia Brewing Company, Poi Dog and Pie Stand Food Trucks, 1 – 5 pm, Lawn: InLiquid will partner with the local brewery and local food talents Poi Dog and Pie Stand to make refreshments and savory and sweet food options available for purchase throughout the afternoon.

Schuylkill River Boat Tours, 5:30 & 7 pm, Walnut Street Dock: Take a one-hour fun and fact-filled guided tour that highlights the past, present, and future of the Hidden River. Discover the sights, sounds, and history of the river, from the early 1700s at historic Bartram’s Garden, to the 1800s at the Fairmount Water Works, to award-winning 21st-century skyscrapers. The Banks offers a setting and experience unlike any other in Philadelphia.

Reception for Configuration by Nicholas Kripal, 5:30 – 8 pm, Talk at 6:30, North Tower Gallery: Jeffrey Mongrain a long-time collaborator and friend of Nicholas Kripal, will speak in depth about Kripal’s widely recognized artwork which elevates everyday objects to a higher form of expression and beauty.

My artwork talks quietly about the underlying significance of the domestic sphere on artist production. It argues for the relevance of craft, specifically ceramics and fiber arts, by creating a conversation between the two mediums. Displaying a fascination with the way fiber marks clay, my ceramics exhibit just how subtle those marks can be.
