Call for Artists: For Every Negative There Is A Positive

Call for Artists: For Every Negative There Is A Positive

This Deadline Expired: Wednesday, June 27, 2018

For every negative there is a positive, for every action, there is a reaction, and for every balance, there is a counterbalance. We have been taught to “see” negative space to better define positive shape or form. How does negative and positive space work in tandem to describe the content and attitude of a work of art? For this exhibition, the St. Louis Artists Guild seeks submissions that explore these concepts either artistically, emotionally, socially or all of the above. Calls for entry are open to all media including but not limited to painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, video, performance, mixed-media, and installation.

Juror: Tom Huck

My art spans many disciplines and areas. Being a self taught, learning and experimenting has become an ingrained part of my practice and as such there is a diverse range of subject matter and on some occasions style. Majority of my works are oil paintings, created in series, in a representational style,. Some of note are “Buddhas on Handmade Paper”, “Bicycles in Snow” “#Savetheelephants”. The common thread in my diverse art is the feeling of serenity and tranquility, with the ultimate objective in every painting to capture the harmonious existence of different elements in nature, that evidences life is strong, calm and beautiful.

Influenced by folklore, superstition, divination, & forgotten territories reclaimed by nature, I create immersive installations out of hand-cut Tyvek—a nonwoven material most familiar as an insulating wrap used in the construction industry. These environments might be fairy-tale forests or the sites of biological disasters. Perhaps both.
