Call for Artists: LandLab Residency

Call for Artists: LandLab Residency

This Deadline Expired: Wednesday, March 15, 2017

The Schuylkill Center is pleased to offer the LandLab residency to artists again in 2017 in partnership with the Center for Emerging Visual Artist (CFEVA). Applications for this unique opportunity are open now through March 15, 2017. Apply here.

The LandLab residency invites professional artists to create projects which operate on the platforms of artistic creation, ecological restoration and education. Improving the health of our environment is one of the greatest challenges the world faces today. In an effort to create innovative solutions, The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and the Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) will work with a panel to select 3 artists or artist teams to work with members of the environmental community (ecologists, educators, restoration professionals) to create innovative, engaging works focusing on solutions to ecological challenges faces in the Philadelphia region.

The Schuylkill Center inspires meaningful connections between people and nature by using our forests and fields as a living laboratory. The Center for Emerging Visual Artists provides career development services for professional visual artists, helps artists reach their audiences, and promotes interest in and understanding of the visual arts among citizens of the Philadelphia region. Together and through this first residency of its kind in Philadelphia, we invite artists to engage audiences in the processes of scientific investigation, artistic creation, and ecological stewardship as they create an innovative, art-based installation that prevents or remediates environmental damage.

LandLab seeks artists engaged in environmental exploration and discovery, who work well collaboratively across disciplines, have a working understanding and awareness of the ecology of Eastern Pennsylvania region, and are committed to deepening public awareness of environmental issues.

Three paid residencies, taking place from Summer 2017 – Summer 2018, will grant selected artists resources and space on the Schuylkill Center’s 340-acre property to create public artworks that prevent or remediate environmental damage.

Each artist selected for a LandLab residency will:

In support of the LandLab application process, the Schuylkill Center and CFEVA will offer information sessions and site visits. While these sessions are optional, we recommend artists attend an information session before applying to LandLab.

All professional artists with some experience in ecological art or environmental practices who are able to work on-site at the Schuylkill Center during the period of summer 2016-summer 2017 are invited to apply before March 15, 2017.

For more information about LandLab, please contact the Schuylkill Center’s Director of Environmental Art, Christina Catanese, at Christina@schuylkillcenter.org or CFEVA’s Community Programming Coordinator, Julia Fox, at julia@cfeva.org.
