Call for Entries: Juried Exhibition Summer 2019 at Blue Mountain Gallery (NYC), Jurors- Eric Aho, painter & Rachel Portesi, photographer

This Deadline Expired: Sunday, April 21, 2019

Blue Mountain Gallery, Juried Exhibition Summer 2019, July 30- Aug 26
ENTRY DEADLINE: April 21, 2019
BLUE MOUNTAIN GALLERY, located in the heart of New York City’s Chelsea District, invites emerging, mid-career and established artists to submit work for its 8th Juried Exhibition. For this show the jurors are prominent painter Eric Aho and acclaimed photographer Rachel Portesi, husband and wife, and photography has been added to the media accepted.
Jurors:
ERIC AHO is a prominent American painter known for his gestural, abstract paintings that evoke natural forms. He is represented by DC Moore Gallery in NYC. After studying at the Central School of Art and Design in London, Aho received his BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. Aho completed his graduate work at the Lahti Art Institute in Finland. His works have been exhibited and collected widely in the United States and abroad and are included in the permanent collections of the Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, NH; Denver Art Museum, CO; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Hood Museum of Art, Hanover, NH; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Neuberger Museum of Art; and the New Britain Museum of American Art, among others.
RACHEL PORTESI received a BA in Sociology and Photography from Marlboro College, VT. Her work as a black and white documentary photographer was complemented by the acquisition of her first Polaroid Land camera in 1991. Ten years later, with a move to New York City and no access to a darkroom, Portesi’s practice shifted exclusively to the immediacy of the Polaroid. Working this way resulted in a body of work produced over more than two decades ending a few years ago when an older, even more finicky, and time-consuming way of making “instant pictures” caught Portesi’s attention—the wet plate collodion tintype. Her current projects in tintype are self reflective “Hair Portraits.” Her photographs have been exhibited at various venues in New England and in New York.
Submit: Two-dimensional media only, including painting, drawing, printmaking, pastel, photography and mixed Media.

Fee: $40 for works, $5 for additional works up to 6 entries

I spend a lot of time in nature observing plants, the environment, and natures cycles. While in or out of the studio, I'm creating both complex and compact environments that enliven personal residences, gallery walls, and city streets. In work ranging from large scale sculptural installations, and living compilations, to miniature assemblage and mixed media works on paper, nature is my rubric and my compass. This is the way I make connections between human interests and the environment that surrounds us.

Simultaneously, nature is my metaphor and material. Grafting together a variety of flat and dimensional elements is not uncommon in my practice.
In different ways, I'll incorporate earth, vines, flowers, roots, seeds, pigment, and wax into sculpture, and mixed media works on paper, more akin to assemblage. Nature and plants frequently act as metaphors for our human experience as they are passively or overtly layered or stitched amidst found imagery, maps, photographs, and words.

Domestic textiles are imbued with the spirit of my imagined foremothers - emblazoned with positive affirmations – as if the spirit of the maker comes to life and offers solace and support. Carole is the caretaker of these thrifted and found objects and the messenger from which their stories flow.

As my concern for our planet grows daily, I make art to express this, in the beautiful, mysterious language of abstraction. For the last 6 years I have been painting about our climate crisis in a series on rising waters, rain, birds, coral, forests and lost ice. I show both the beauty and desecration of our environment. I convey feeling through the use of color and movement.
