VisArts invites artists working in all media to apply for 2021 Solo Exhibitions in the Gibbs Street Gallery, Common Ground Gallery, and Concourse Gallery. https://visarts.submittable.com/submit/153616/call-for-solo-exhibitions-2021
Exhibitions in each of the galleries explore the breadth of contemporary art featuring emerging to mid-career artists. Exhibits reflect a wide range of media and experimental approaches that offer the viewer unexpected interactions with art.
The Gibbs Street Gallery is approximately 1,100 square feet with 16 ft. ceilings. It is on the street level with floor to ceiling windows along one wall. International, national and local artists are welcome to apply.
The Common Ground Gallery is located on the second floor and is approximately 300 square feet. Artists must live in the Mid-Atlantic region to apply for a solo exhibition in this gallery.
The Concourse Gallery is located on the second floor and is approximately 500 square feet. It has curved windows along one wall. International, national, and local artists are welcome to apply.

Applicants who have participated in a solo exhibition at VisArts within the past two years are not eligible to apply.

Application Deadline: Friday, April 5, 2020 before midnight
*Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

All application materials must be submitted online through our website no later than 11:59 pm EST on 04/05/2020.

*  states of mind as one-word declarations (SO I WAS, LIKE....)

* the interior lives of artists (DESIDERATUM)

* odd courting and mating habits in the animal kingdom that sometimes echo our own (RE:PRODUCTION – Portraits)
* the dysfunction of todays politics seen through an historical perspective (WHEEL, DEAL, STEAL, THEN SPIN)

* death – it’s customs, euphemisms, architecture (THE FINAL FRONTIER)

* profiling and identity (The MARK Portraits)

* violence in America (TOKENS, PRECIS, HARBINGERS AND HERALDS, AMERICAN PIE, EIKONS)

Through abstract geometric paintings, Philadelphia artist Melinda Steffy translates music into color patterns, exploring ideas of translation, information and data, and how music weaves throughout human experience. Melinda Steffy’s RUINATION DAY series (acrylic on wood panel) deconstructs folk and blues songs that reference the date April 14, which is when Lincoln was shot, the Titanic hit the iceberg, and the Black Sunday dust storm devastated the Midwest. Melinda Steffy’s BACH PROJECT series (watercolor on paper) converts classical music by J.S. Bach and Bela Bartok into grids and pie charts. Rather than hear one note after the other through time, the paintings show all of the notes and rhythms simultaneously on one visual plane.

Relationships
(I always say) are never easy:
especially those between
color, shape, texture, space . . .
and tension.
The relationship of the part to the part,
the part to the whole and the relationship
of the piece to the viewer . . . no matter
what materials I use is all important.
I use titles to emotionalize these abstract
pieces to help communicate a connection
between the individual and
the universal whole.

In the metal pieces I use recycled aluminum
printing press plates which I sand,
cut and glue onto wood panels, they are
about energy and light, patterns and
motion, all influenced by the microcosm
of life forms, biology, and a
hint of satire.
