Call for Volunteers – InLiquid Benefit v.15

InLiquid is seeking volunteers for our upcoming Benefit v. 15, Saturday, February 7, 2014 at Crane Arts, 1400 N. American Street.

This much-anticipated event is not only a fabulous social happening but also a showcase for exceptional contemporary art featuring work from the emerging to the established. Most importantly of course, this benefit event is the major annual fundraiser for InLiquid, which supports and promotes visual artists while serving as a comprehensive hub and catalyst for our region’s arts community.

Perfect for anyone seeking experience in the arts or nonprofit sector, as well as event coordination, exhibition installation, and more.

There are many volunteer shifts available, from February 2 – 11, along with a variety of ways for you to help out! If you’re interested in participating in this year’s event, select an open shift/shifts on the Volunteer Page here.

Mindy Flexer makes magical realist, figurative, oil paintings. She uses observation and invention to explore identity and family relationships, and the way personal history resides within the larger arc of time. Her current work is about our extraordinary historical moment, when climate crisis threatens all life on earth, and climate justice offers the possibility of global transformation to a just and equitable world. Her visual language of a seamless world of people, animals, and place, is the language of the interconnection of all life on earth. Flexer’s paintings speak about climate in a language personal enough for people to hear it. Her goal is to inspire people to action. She hopes to connect people to themselves and each other, so each person can find their place in the mass movement necessary to create a sustainable future. In this way, she sees her paintings aspart of the great web of healing she deeply believes can save our planet.

I enjoy the manipulation of materials and how process itself contributes to the life and form of the image. Dramatic, gestural lines describe the play of light and wind across the water, while softer marks add life to the slow movement of rain laden clouds. Areas of sky, water, and land are knit together with brushstrokes to represent their seamless interaction under the common conditions of weather and time. In my acid etched tin pieces, areas of watery marks are left visible to suggest the underlying layers of the landscape. I  do not strive to recreate the particulars of  places that inspire me, but rather the timelessness of the elements of light, weather, and geometries that inform them. My work is not about how the landscape looks as much as about how the landscape makes me feel. I try to create an image that allows the viewer to engage with it in such a way as to invite similar introspection.

As a native of Israel, Dganit grew up in a Kibbutz. She moved with her husband to the US in 1992. After years of creating art as a self-taught artist, she became a full time student at UNC Chapel Hill. Moving to Philadelphia, she earned her BFA with honors from the University of The Arts, and MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art. Currently, she is working in her studio at the Crane Old School in Philadelphia.
In her work she is pulling from her reservoir of life experiences, memories, intuitive processes, and curiosity to construct a “place”, an environment – a landscape. Within it, she aims to present an idea composed of multiple layers, which focuses not only on the physical “being” of land, but also on land as a source of emotional and psychological mood.

Incisions and scrapings, along with pencil and oil pastel marks, trace the creation of the work over time. Light and shadow are key elements in these abstracted scenes of everyday life.  Working over multiple sessions result in traces of previous versions and iterations which allow the viewer to engage in the work on multiple levels.

Matthew Borgen's recent work utilizes imagery from comic books published during the mid-20th century — the genre’s so-called golden age. Using their visual conventions, nostalgic aura, and narrative structure in combination with images borrowed from art history and other popular cultural sources, Borgen has developed a hybrid visual language which he uses in his digital prints and wall installations to make comment on topics ranging from historical, formal strategies of artmaking to issues within the current political and social discourse.
