Elemental: Earth, Fire, Water, Air

This Deadline Expired: Thursday, September 2, 2021

Early chemists believed these were the elements of life and reality, and when surrounded by them, it’s not hard to see why. Pieces that involve any of the four elements in any way, by medium or subject, will be eligible for this online show. Entries are open to all original 2-D or 3-D artwork. MFA will display selected works in their online Curve Gallery from October 15 through November 30, 2021. Show Chairs: Richard Niewerth and Wil Scott.

The intentional physicality of my paintings is as much a result of my dialogue throughout the process as it is the means with which I invite viewers to experience the work viscerally. Iconography may be the entry point for viewers, but the essence of the elements and ambiguity demand individual interaction with each painting. Layering is both revealing and concealing, creating a balanced tension and suspension which is really what painting is for me. I use the elements to speak for me and I wish to open doors to new dialogue within and between viewers.

Constance Culpepper is a contemporary artist located in Philadelphia, PA (USA). Her large, vibrantly colored oil paintings primarily depict domestic scenes, including interiors, still life, the female figure, and chairs. The paintings are representational, yet deconstructed, and full of pattern. With her paper collages, Culpepper is more abstract, yet the themes of domesticity can still be found.

I endeavor to find the connection between math and deliberation with nature and randomness. I employ an experimental approach inspired by urban and natural textures, using geometry, patterns, and contrived shapes to create a lyrical, non-narrative statement. My paintings are colorful, contemporary and abstract, often based on musical frequencies, graffiti, architecture and patterns.
