Fleisher Art: Apply to Teach at Teen Lounge (Philadelphia, PA)

Teen Lounge at Fleisher Art Memorial is currently accepting proposals for month-long, paid teaching artist residencies. We’re looking for working artists who are excited about working with young people to come share their techniques, skills and inspiration!

Teen Lounge is a free, drop-in afterschool arts program for young people ages 13-19. Every term, our student group reviews workshop proposals and selects up to 6 artists to teach. Past projects have included screenprinted t-shirts, zines, pyrography, LED circuitry and more. Experimental projects are encouraged.

I was a choreographer and modern dancer for most of my life. It is the balance between energy and stillness that I carry into my art. I reflect this discord in a gesture and painterly contemporary style. I use a variety of media to create a raw, yet, luminous painting in oil, layering pastels, glazes, pencil, charcoal, and develop painted collages of varying surfaces. I create paintings directly from a model's pose and the subtle nuances of that gesture. I paint in a realistic approach, and yet, abstraction tends to take over. I have had an extensive career teaching art to students of all levels and ages. My teaching is an integral part of my art making process.

Relationships
(I always say) are never easy:
especially those between
color, shape, texture, space . . .
and tension.
The relationship of the part to the part,
the part to the whole and the relationship
of the piece to the viewer . . . no matter
what materials I use is all important.
I use titles to emotionalize these abstract
pieces to help communicate a connection
between the individual and
the universal whole.

In the metal pieces I use recycled aluminum
printing press plates which I sand,
cut and glue onto wood panels, they are
about energy and light, patterns and
motion, all influenced by the microcosm
of life forms, biology, and a
hint of satire.
