The Leeway Foundation is a Philadelphia-based independent foundation that supports women, trans*, and gender nonconforming artists and cultural producers working in communities at the intersection of art, culture, and social change. Through the Foundation’s grantmaking and other programs, we promote expression that amplifies the voices of those on the margins, promotes sustainable and healthy communities, and works in the service of movements for change.


A Leeway internship is an excellent opportunity to learn about grantmaking at the intersection of art and social change. This internship is designed to expose interns to philanthropy and the nonprofit sector and provide them with rich learning experiences. This internship is an excellent opportunity to learn about the foundation’s communications, public relations, as well as social media strategy and administration. The intern will assist the Communications Director and the Community Outreach and Communication Assistant to advance Leeway programs, mission and, community through communications.


Assisting in the administrative aspects of various communications and content processes;
Assisting in digital content creation for social media, e-news, and website including original content;
Attending and providing support for various grant info and applicant support sessions, panel meetings, and other convenings and events as identified;
Compiling and assisting in the design of infographic and other visual representations of grant application data;
Updating database and various contact lists;
Other special projects as assigned.
An ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

Interest in art and social change
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
Strong organizational skills
Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Willingness to engage with Leeway’s community-at-large in empathetic and equitable ways
Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and project management systems • Strong knowledge and interest in social media trends and digital content creation
Working knowledge of Adobe Suite including Photoshop and InDesign

The position start date is flexible but, ideally, will begin in April 2020 and continue through the summer. Interns work a minimum of 10 hours a week, with a flexible schedule during daytime business hours (10-4PM), though participation at weekly staff meetings on Wednesdays at 11AM are required.

Leeway offers a stipend of $150/week for the position. This intern reports directly to the Program Director but can support the work of programs, communications, and administration at Leeway.
