LIFTS Artist Grant

LIFTS Artist Grant

This Deadline Expired: Wednesday, April 29, 2020

LIFTS is an artist grant and acquisition award sponsored by Paige West and the West Collection in response to COVID-19. The initiative is designed to offer assistance during this very challenging time. Each week for ten weeks, Paige West will announce on the West Collection website (www.westcollection.org) one artist who will receive $5,000 in the form of a grant to use how they need, and an additional $5,000 for the purchase of their work(s). The primary criteria in selecting an artist is a review of their artwork and how their artwork may compliment or stretch the existing works in the West Collection. The ten artists who are chosen for this initiative will later be part of an exhibition, once the West Collection space in Philadelphia is complete.

A note from Paige West:

We were in the process of converting an old elevator (lift) factory into an art space in Philadelphia when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. While we’re all doing our part to stop the spread by staying home, we worry about artists who have lost employment and may be affected by the inevitable decline in collecting. We were already working on plans to relaunch the West Prize, an annual acquisition prize launched in 2009. As of today, we are launching a reworked version of the West Prize to offer assistance – a small lift, perhaps – to a few artists during this challenging time. Each week we will give one artist $5,000 to use however they need, and additionally will be acquiring their work for the West Collection with another $5,000. The first artist will be announced on April 3, the next on April 10, and every Friday following for a total of 10 weeks. We’ll highlight these artists each week on this website. We plan to show all of the artists collected during this period in a group show in the future art space, that lift factory, in Philadelphia. Artists can apply starting today by going to this link. I will be choosing work based on years of curating the West Collection and what will fit the collection well at this time.

I realize that there are a lot of immediate short-term needs for many artists right now, so on April 10th, we’ll be launching another initiative to support artists with direct as-needed funds. More information on this will be coming soon.

Please stay inside and stay safe. We look forward to seeing you all back in studios and galleries once we are on the other side of this. –-Paige
