Masquerade

This Deadline Expired: Wednesday, October 7, 2020

Masquerade
“Mask, a form of disguise or concealment usually worn over or in front of the face to hide the identity of a person and by its own features to establish another being. This essential characteristic of hiding and revealing personalities or moods is common to all masks. As cultural objects they have been used throughout the world in all periods since the Stone Age and have been as varied in appearance as in their use and symbolism.”1

Deja 42 Art Gallery is seeking artists who would like to present their work in their upcoming October/November exhibition, Masquerade. Creators working in all media (painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, mixed media, ceramics, textile, et al.) are welcome. Pieces may reflect the creator’s interpretation and reflections on masks and identity, the challenges to individuality as masks have become mandated, and/or the transformative beauty, symbolism, and celebration that masks embody. All media will receive due and equitable consideration.

Deadline for submission is Wednesday, October 7th, 2020.
Accepted artists will be notified by Friday, October 9th, 2020.
Gallery-ready pieces must be delivered to the Gallery before but absolutely no later than Friday, October 16th, 2020.
A $20 fee via PayPal is required for up to three different artworks submitted.
Detailed images of submitted works may also be included.
It is preferable that artworks are for sale.
Deja 42 Art Gallery retains a 40% commission on all sold artwork.
Since there are five Saturdays in October, the show will open Saturday, October 17th, 2020.
Please include contact information, artwork title, media and dimensions with your submission. Send all submissions to deja42artgallery@gmail.com.

Stuart Lehrman's practice involves dialogue between order and chaos. Constantly experimenting with the physical properties of paint, between adding and subtracting, making and unmaking, working to a place where he loses control of the painting and then struggling back to achieve the right balance between wild spontaneity and emotional restraint.

Andrea Caldarise is a painter and collaborator inspired by exploring memories and happenstance conversations. Public spaces are visceral, storied environments—her art practice explores the psychological connection between landscapes and people. Each painting invokes a singular place, inspired by referencing the emotions, sights, and textures of an experience. Caldarise’s art focuses on connecting audiences with cityscapes and common, shared spaces within by capturing the experience of discovery, recreating a place through memories and imagination. Her work borders on magical realism, borrowing from observations, historical research, and surreal themes, Caldarise's artwork reveals the commonplace and extraordinary narratives in our environment.
