The Assistant Director of Education (ADE) oversees the New Museum Department of Education and Public Engagement’s educator and youth programs; tours and access programs; and community partnership initiatives. ADE co-directs the Department’s educational research and publishing program, with the Director of Education and Public Engagement. ADE will cultivate and sustain strong relationships with artists, community organizations, educators, researchers, and New Museum staff to implement innovative, impactful learning and engagement programs that advance the mission and values of the Museum using the values and methods of the Department.

ADE supervises full and part-time staff members who support youth and family programs, exhibition tours, and community partnership programs.

Working hours will be 40 hours/week, 10:00am-6:00pm, Monday through Friday. Occasional evenings and weekends required. The ADE reports to the Director of Education and Public Engagement.

Responsibilities:
• Conceptualize, develop, and implement strategic and operating plans for educators, youth, tours and access programs, family resources, and community engagement
• Develop robust educational research and publishing program in collaboration with Director of Education and Public Engagement
• Collaborate on public program development; in the past, this position has also supervised artists in residence
• Supervise staff members, teaching artists, and teaching fellows who support the following program areas:
o Exhibition tours

o Cohort-based youth programs
o Educator professional development cohorts and programs
o Community partnerships
• Work with New Museum Development staff on grant proposals and final reports for funders
• Work with Department of External Affairs to communicate and engage audiences in relevant programs
• Develop and manage program-related budgets

Qualifications

• 5-7 years of experience working in museum education and community outreach with a focus in contemporary art; 3 years of supervisory experience
• MA, MFA, Ed.M., or other graduate degree relating to the position required; terminal degree in relevant discipline a plus
• Exemplary oral and written communication skills
• Ability to envision and execute numerous projects simultaneously
• Well-developed relationships and expansive network with diverse contemporary artists, especially emerging and mid-career artists
• Advanced knowledge of and engagement with contemporary art and relevant learning theories, acquired through study and practice
• Demonstrated experience with one or more research methodologies, including qualitative, quantitative, and/or normative methods
• Demonstrated success in managing, mentoring, and collaborating with staff members to create mission-aligned, impactful learning opportunities
• Demonstrated success in managing programs characterized by mutually respectful communication and attentive engagement with groups of diverse ages, backgrounds, experiences, and identities
• Facility with online learning platforms and comfort managing programs both online and in person
• Knowledge of the NYC educational ecosystem, particularly professional educator development, is a plus

Paid Time and Holidays Off
