Open Call: Gallery Aferro Studio Residency
This Deadline Expired: Thursday, June 20, 2019
Deadline: 6/20/2019 @ 11:59pm EST for residency starting August 20, 2019
Gallery Aferro is invested in creating and sharing resources for artists, and encouraging a genuinely accessible, engagingly rigorous environment where artists can make work as large or complex as desired. This open call is for artists and writers working in almost any media, and who would like to continue their creative practice in an urban studio residency in downtown Newark, NJ. The residency is a 6-month rotation with a monthly fee of $275, and the possibility of renewal after the initial term. Collectives are welcome to apply, and there are no geographical restrictions.
For more than 10 years, resident artists at Gallery Aferro have had 24/7 access to large studios, ongoing first consideration for a range of on and off-site opportunities, access to their studio blog, and generous one-on-one career and technical support from staff. The growing network of residency alumni is an increasingly powerful, multigenerational group of contemporary artists working across media. Participation in the residency program includes a platform to share and participate in a community of artists and others through informal networking and participation in seasonal open studios and artist talks at the gallery. As a presenting and workspace organization run by artists, Gallery Aferro is dedicated to providing opportunities to their residents in the form of exhibitions, opportunities, advocacy, visiting curators, and letters of recommendation. The work-only studios average more than 600 sq. ft. per studio, and have dedicated storage space and high ceilings. The gallery is located just 5 blocks from Newark Penn Station and is walking distance to other galleries in the city as well as a wide range of local businesses and notable sites. Many alumni have commented that the building is a kind of context within a context: an evocative repurposed 20,000 sq. ft. building in almost ceaseless use by a varied and lively population of gallery staff, volunteers, artists, youth, and community residents, all within the dense cultural, architectural and historical context of NJ’s largest city.
