Open Call to DVAA Members and the Public: Personally Speaking (Philadelphia, PA)

Open Call to DVAA Members and the Public: Personally Speaking (Philadelphia, PA)

This Deadline Expired: Friday, January 12, 2018

From January through March, Lightbox Film Center will screen a collection of classic Hollywood and independent features, documentaries, and television work from the mid 20th century as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation. To coincide with this program, International House Philadelphia will also be hosting an exhibition in their gallery space, organized and presented by Da Vinci Art Alliance (DVAA).

This year’s UCLA Festival of Preservation will feature a variety of films connected by the underrepresented experiences of marginalized communities and social injustices they endured. The collection includes: the story of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, Donna Deitch’s tender portrayal of lesbian romance in the 1950’s, a small town murder mystery surrounding antisemitism in the post-war period, and Juleen Compton’s radical assertions of female independence and sexuality, to name a few.

To parallel this artistic endeavor, DVAA presents Personally Speaking. This exhibition will encompass the experiences of our artists as they explore aspects of their lifetime and/or creative practice that reflect social turmoil or in some way respond to a life well lived. While submissions do not have to be overtly political we encourage artists to meditate on how a problematic cultural history (or present) has shaped their lives. What was the first artwork you made after 9/11? Did the recent election season motivate a change in your life? Have you made art that inspires peace and unity? Or is the act of creating cathartic during dark times? Tell us and submit your work!

Lightbox Film Center is Philadelphia’s premier exhibitor of film and moving image art. The signature public arts program of International House Philadelphia, an independent nonprofit organization.

This exhibition will take place in the East Alcove Gallery, located in the public lobby of the International House building at 3701 Chestnut Street. A public opening reception will be held on January 23, 2018.

Acrylic and watercolor grids and overlapping lines, gestured brush strokes and bold color are the first impressions when seeing the new work by Patricia Ingersoll. Ingersoll continues her studies of the merging of organic and geometric elements in nature and how they compare and contrast with the human condition. Her explorations of subjects found in nature, such as water, dense woods, vines, plants introduces challenges in the process of deconstructing the pictorial plane, or breaking it apart, in order to reconstruct it as individual, but equal parts. Through this process of mapping and diagramming with line, she is exploring and recording where these elements intersect pictorially.
