Parks and Recreation Specialty Assistant Teaching Artist (Philadelphia, PA)

Mural Arts Philadelphia unites artists and communities through a collaborative process, rooted in the traditions of mural-making, to create art that transforms public spaces and individual lives. Since its inception in 1984, Mural Arts has created more than 3,000 community driven murals and provided thousands of underserved youth and adults with award-winning arts education programming.

Spring and Summer 2018

Assistant teaching artists work closely with Art Education staff to inspire and guide students in creating individual works of art, designing murals, experimenting with media, and working alongside other professional artists on large-scale public art projects. In addition to assisting with recruitment and maintaining a classroom blog and attendance records as required by Mural Arts.

Typical examples of work:

● Instructs and supervises youth in a summer outdoor adventure club. Activities include games, environmental education, service projects and trips.

● Employee will determine types and amounts of supplies for various types of projects.

● Assist with outdoor special events by directing participants, teaching activities, set-up and breakdown.

● Perform related work as required.

Knowledge’s and Abilities

● Knowledge in outdoor art making activities is helpful

● Ability to organize, instruct and motivate individuals and groups, and maintain order among recreation and social groups

● Ability to maintain effective working relationships with participants, associates and general public.

Requirements

● 2-3 years teaching experience;

● Knowledge of art history and art-making techniques;

● Ability to manage a classroom of 10-15 students;

● Some experience working with under-served youth and/or middle and/or high school students;

● Ability to engage youth with multiple learning styles and varying artistic abilities;

● Intermediate classroom management skills;

● Willingness to work collaboratively and in partnership with parents, program managers, student advocates, and artists;

● Access to reliable transportation;

● Familiarity with digital media and social media a plus;

● Up-to-date PA Child Abuse Report, PA Criminal Background Check, and FBI Check upon interview.

Anticipated Work Dates

● This employment opportunity is a seasonal part-time position. Employment dates are April-October (but are negotiable). Work hours during the spring and fall are approximately 12 hours per week.

● A sample schedule could be as follows (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

● Within 9 week cycle there will be 3 – 3 week sessions (week 1, 4, 7)

Spring

○ Session 1: April 9-27th

○ Session 2: April 30-May 18th

○ Session 3: May 21-June 8th

Fall:

○ Session 4: September 17 – October 5th

○ Session 5: October 8 – October 26th

○ Session 6: October 29th – November 16th

The rate for this position is $15 per hour. Health benefits are not included with this position.
