RAW 2020 – 6th Annual Juried Photography Exhibition

This Deadline Expired: Tuesday, October 1, 2019

The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton University presents RAW 2020, a juried photography competition in which the top images will be selected for an exhibition on view from January 10 to March 29, 2020 in the Noyes Museum Galleries at The Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University located at 2200 Fairmount Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Photographers are invited to consider the theme for this exhibition, “Sense of Place.” Cultural geographers, anthropologists, sociologists and urban planners study why certain places hold special meaning to particular people or animals. Places said to have a strong “sense of place” have a strong identity that is deeply felt by inhabitants and visitors.

Scott Troxel draws on the aesthetics of bygone technology and the forward-looking designs of the Atomic Age and mid-century modernism to make dynamic, retrofuturist wooden wall sculptures that evoke nostalgia for the past as much as they look to the future. Fascinated by the way pieces of technology, culture, and design reveal their age, Scott aims to make works that cannot be pinned to a specific era. By utilizing new and reclaimed wood, metal, plastics and other materials, Scott's mixed media sculptural work defies normal classification.

I spend a lot of time in nature observing plants, the environment, and natures cycles. While in or out of the studio, I'm creating both complex and compact environments that enliven personal residences, gallery walls, and city streets. In work ranging from large scale sculptural installations, and living compilations, to miniature assemblage and mixed media works on paper, nature is my rubric and my compass. This is the way I make connections between human interests and the environment that surrounds us.

Simultaneously, nature is my metaphor and material. Grafting together a variety of flat and dimensional elements is not uncommon in my practice.
In different ways, I'll incorporate earth, vines, flowers, roots, seeds, pigment, and wax into sculpture, and mixed media works on paper, more akin to assemblage. Nature and plants frequently act as metaphors for our human experience as they are passively or overtly layered or stitched amidst found imagery, maps, photographs, and words.
