Solo Exhibition with Residency: 2020-21

Solo Exhibition with Residency: 2020-21

This Deadline Expired: Friday, November 1, 2019

The Material Matters residency is open to artists working with materials from Pennsylvania’s history (past, present, or future). Examples of materials include steel, wood, paper, fiber, plastics, glass, electronics, and more.
This short-term AIR program, titled Material Matters, is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Two artists will be selected for solo exhibitions accompanied by five-day residencies: one in late Fall 2020 and one in Winter/Spring 2021.

The selected artists will offer three interactive workshops for groups such as K-12 art educators, veterans, college students, or the general public; a gallery talk; other related public programming that will engage the community, such as lectures or tours, are encouraged. These events offer the opportunity to extend the reach of the exhibit, expand access to the arts for students in our rural area, and strengthen our community through the arts. Programs will be free and open to the public.

The Gallery is located in Williamsport, PA, on the campus of Pennsylvania College of Technology, a nationally recognized leader in applied technology education.
Artists will have the opportunity to work in the campus Makerspace, which contains 3D printers, Laser cutter, CNC Router, Mig and Tig welding, full woodshop, Bernina sewing machine and serger, and more.

We are also accepting applications for solo exhibitions without accompanying residency for 2020-21 (deadline November 1) and 2021-22 (deadline August 1, 2020).

Trained in this order, as an artist, social scientist, and architect and urban planner, not surprisingly, Spilka’s fabric work continues to investigate themes grounded in these ways of knowing the world.

Andrew Chalfen's colorful abstract-geometric paintings, drawings, and mixed-media pieces are dense, vibrant worlds of precisely rendered patterning, suggestive of aerial views, cartography, architectural renderings, psychedelia musical notation, urban-like densities, circuitry and digital life. His process is a mixture of focused intentionality and generative randomization strategies.

Phyllis Gorsen, a Philadelphia based painter, creates contemporary paintings that are a beautiful mixture of abstract and representation. She uses vibrant color and geometric elements blended with figuration. Her work is about how we are all connected through the commonality of everyday elements.
