STUDIO TECHNICIAN
The Studio Technician is a part of The Clay Studio education and community engagement team, which also includes the Education Manager, Education Assistants, another Studio Technician, the Community Engagement (CE) Manager, CE Assistant, and CE Teaching Artists. The Studio Technician provides support to all aspects of TCS, ensuring proper functioning and excellence of the studios and building.
CUSTOMER FOCUS & EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Acts with the customer in mind: Seeks out ways to meet the expectations of internal & external customers. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with customer and gains their respect & trust. Views students, artists (external) faculty & staff (internal) as key customers. Communicates with them to ensure an excellent educational experience and positive perception of TCS. Obtains first-hand customer information and uses it to drive growth & continuous improvement.
PLANNING & ORGANIZING
Orchestrates multiple activities at once to maintain smooth running operations. Accurately scopes out projects to assess key challenges, objectives & outcomes. Breaks down the work into process steps while s/he anticipates and adjusts for problems and roadblocks in studios and facilities by: updating and monitoring schedules, tracking inventory, safety inspections and setting up for events. Maintains and arranges information and files in a useful manner.
OCCUPATIONAL
Knowledge, Skill, and attitude: Maintains a safe environment by using the technical skills and knowledge of operating and repairing equipment. Uses education of firings and materials to process student work and to educate others. Provides assistance and information to all within the TCS community, having patience and a great attitude while remaining productive at work.
KEY COMPETENCIES
- Experience firing gas kilns, glaze chemistry, and kiln maintenance
- A focus on customer service and community building
- Must be able to lift 50lbs
- A high level of attention to detail and ability to balance multiple tasks
QUALIFICATIONS & COMPENSATION
- 1-year studio technician experience in a ceramic studio
- Experience firing gas kilns, glaze chemistry, and kiln maintenance preferred
- Salary range of $32,000-$38,000, depending upon qualifications, experience, and performance

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
This position works in partnership with the other Studio Technician and Education department staff and reports to the Chief Operating Officer on all matters related to job description, obtaining appropriate & final approvals from manager to build alignment.
WORK SCHEDULE
The Studio Technician works 40 hours per week, on average. Normal hours for the position are 9 AM to 5 PM, Tuesday through Saturday. The Studio Technician is expected to be present for all scheduled gas firings for the School and special events that may occur outside of regular business hours; in these instances, hours are adjusted accordingly. The Studio Technician also works First Friday events as scheduled.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This person must be aware of the health hazards of working with clay and glaze chemicals and take appropriate measures in order to be safe. The Clay Studio is clean, although it is impossible to clay dust.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties and responsibilities of the Studio Technician, reflecting the tasks associated with their key competencies:
CUSTOMER FOCUS & EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
- Communicates on a daily basis about the needs of the studios and the tasks that were performed
- Communicates inventory needs
- Helps determine when new equipment is needed and when repairs to existing equipment will suffice
- Communicates all orders
- Meets deadlines for processing students’ work each semester
- Offers technical assistance for TCS community
- Helps maintain an excellent and safe environment
- Provide technical assistance and training in use of equipment
PLANNING & ORGANIZING
- Posts master firing schedule
- Monitors master firing schedule to ensure that deadlines are met
- Tracks inventory of all supplies and materials (clay, chemicals, cones, tools, general, etc.) including Special Event needs
- Supports TCS programs, workshops, and all special events
- Assist with the set up of workshop rooms
- Trains and monitors the completion of jobs by the interns on a daily basis
- Inspects building and makes sure grounds are safe for all
- Collects and organizes monthly bills for all Programs
- Stocks spare parts for equipment repair
OCCUPATIONAL
- Inspects, maintains, and repairs all Studios and Equipment
- Cleans and oversees the cleaning of the School and the building
- Provides general preventive maintenance of entire building: interior & exterior
- Assists with projects and building maintenance
- Replenishes glazes, oxides, and slips
- Stocks clay and tools in the School Store
- Stocks and cleans Chemical Room
- Assists with clay and chemical deliveries and other deliveries when needed
The duties of the Studio Technician position will shift when TCS moves into its new facility in the fall of 2021.
