The Female Gaze

The Female Gaze

This Deadline Expired: Friday, March 4, 2022

Although not an official, universally-defined theory, the term Female Gaze has been used by those in the film industry and more recently has become a buzzword in popular culture. It might be assumed that the Female Gaze is just a gender-reversal of the more well known Male Gaze – meaning female creators objectifying male characters and treating them as objects of desire for an assumed heterosexual female spectator – but the Female Gaze is actually a much more complex and nuanced concept. Writer and director Jill Soloway argued that, “the female gaze is really about using the presence of a female perspective on screen to emphasize the story’s emotions and characters”. The female characters have agency and the ability to share their story through their experiences and emotions, rather than having their stories told by a male spectator or being diminished to plot-supporting objects of desire for a male character.

Many who talk about creating with the female gaze express that it is not just about empowering female perspectives, but is instead about creating an equal space for characters of all genders. Works engaging with the female gaze can also be created by any gender.

The concept of the Female Gaze is still being developed. The way it relates to how we create and consume all forms of visual media is actively being explored. Does the work you create utilize the female gaze, consciously or subconsciously?

Manifold Global invites artists of all backgrounds and mediums to submit artwork which engages with the concept of the Female Gaze. Deadline to apply is March 4, 2022.
