Vashon Artist Residency 2022

This Deadline Expired: Thursday, September 9, 2021

Vashon Artist Residency will begin accepting applications on July 8 for the 2022 year. Applications close on September 9, 2022 at 11pm PST. Vashon Artist Residency offers artists space and time to create, ponder, imagine and live in a community of artists on spectacular Vashon Island in the midst of Puget Sound/the Salish Sea in Washington state. They offer self-directed residency sessions to emerging and established artists, writers, scholars, musicians and performing artists. The Residency provides lodging and workspace on a sliding scale fee structure to three residents at a time for one month long sessions all year round. Applications are reviewed by a rotating panel of alumni evaluators. Invitation to Vashon Artist Residency is based on artistic merit, ability to be self-directed and feasibility of residency goals. In addition, the selection panel will consider how well applicants align with our mission and vision. Applicants will be notified 30 to 45 days after the deadline of their status.

I spend a lot of time in nature observing plants, the environment, and natures cycles. While in or out of the studio, I'm creating both complex and compact environments that enliven personal residences, gallery walls, and city streets. In work ranging from large scale sculptural installations, and living compilations, to miniature assemblage and mixed media works on paper, nature is my rubric and my compass. This is the way I make connections between human interests and the environment that surrounds us.

Simultaneously, nature is my metaphor and material. Grafting together a variety of flat and dimensional elements is not uncommon in my practice.
In different ways, I'll incorporate earth, vines, flowers, roots, seeds, pigment, and wax into sculpture, and mixed media works on paper, more akin to assemblage. Nature and plants frequently act as metaphors for our human experience as they are passively or overtly layered or stitched amidst found imagery, maps, photographs, and words.
