Vermont Studio Center Invites Fellowship Applications From Artists, Writers

Situated along the banks of the Gihon River in the historic village of Johnson, Vermont, the Vermont Studio Center works to foster creativity through community, collaboration, and quiet reflection supported by the unspoiled beauty of the northern Green Mountains.

The center currently is inviting applications for residency fellowships. Each year, VSC offers two hundred and fifty fellowships to artists and writers to attend a month-long residency. Residencies include a private room in modest, shared housing, twenty-four hour access to a private studio space in one of six medium-specific studio buildings, and three communal meals per day (plus fresh fruit, coffee/tea/cold beverages, and cereal available around the clock).

Colorful, minimalist  still-life paintings created with a palette knife, which leaves a distinctive texture.  Incisions and scrapings, along with pencil and oil pastel marks, trace the creation of the work over time. Light and shadow are key elements in these abstracted scenes of everyday life.  Working over multiple sessions result in traces of previous versions and iterations which allow the viewer to engage in the work on multiple levels.

Relationships
(I always say) are never easy:
especially those between
color, shape, texture, space . . .
and tension.
The relationship of the part to the part,
the part to the whole and the relationship
of the piece to the viewer . . . no matter
what materials I use is all important.
I use titles to emotionalize these abstract
pieces to help communicate a connection
between the individual and
the universal whole.

In the metal pieces I use recycled aluminum
printing press plates which I sand,
cut and glue onto wood panels, they are
about energy and light, patterns and
motion, all influenced by the microcosm
of life forms, biology, and a
hint of satire.
