Philip Govedare’s stay in Rome suffuses his Recent Paintings. Painted during his two years as faculty member at the Tyler School of Art In Rome and after his return to Philadelphia, these canvases continue the artist’s ongoing dialogue with color and form. Vibrant color, geometric pattern, and ambiguous imagery expand his pervious vocabulary of richly textured and carefully balanced abstract shapes. While formerly Govedare eschewed referential Imagery, these paintings incorporate allusions to the familiar–leaf designs are discernable in many canvases and recurring patterns of curved black lines can be read as evocations. of ornamental grillwork. Likewise, Govedare’s characteristic painted and scraped surfaces now evoke walls textured by attrition. The subtle beauty and filtered light do not refer specifically to Rome, but rather to its atmosphere and its legacy in memory.
