Linda Dubin Garfield

Mixed Media/Printmaking

Otavalo Series

Travel to the Ecuadorean Andes in the Otavalo area provided much inspiration for artwork. The colorful clothing and textiles, the lush Andes, farmland patterns, abundant flowers, deep rich soil… all contributed to a vast visual vocabulary transposed into these 8 mixed media pieces.

Outstanding Natural Beauty

In the summer of 2015, I visited England- London and the surrounding countryside of The Cotswolds, known for their outstanding natural beauty, in an amazing trip with my grandson. I was struck by the lovely gardens, landscape and amazing designs of William Morris, an Arts and Crafts designer who was very famous in his day (1834- 1896) especially for textiles. These works on paper capture the memories and impressions of this place.

Natural Wonders

The movement of butterflies across a field, the dappled sunlight on the bark of a tree, the dance of grasses and flowers in a breeze are a joyful experience. I evoke the primary and pastel colors of spring, the many greens of summer, and the ochres, rusts and reds of autumn as I print on paper, capturing nature’s wonders using abstract and expressionistic forms. This series is inspired by the garden, the colors, smells and joys we see and feel, that sustain us through good and bad.

This series is dedicated to the memory of my dear friend and yoga teacher Joy Irvin who was a master gardener

Transcening Journey

Travel transforms you, changes how you see the world and how you see yourself. Going to Myanmar in 2012 was a transcending experience. The place is spiritual and the journey was too. Here is a series of my visual impressions of what I experienced there- the landscape, spices, fabrics, stupas, golden Buddhas, and people. This series of monotypes with gold collage is my visual reflection and memoir.

Ice And Blue

This series of monotypes and monotypes with collage was inspired by our travel to Antarctica in the winter of 2012. Pristine, white, wild, wonderful and silent, the seventh continent is a place of great beauty and spectacular scenery. The ocean is clear blue- no pollution at all!

Far From The Familiar

This series of mixed media prints was inspired by a trip to the Amazon River in Peru in the winter of 2013. It was very far from what is familiar to me. There was little person space when we went to see how people lived. They did not have windows or doors. The roofs were made of tin or thatched with palm leaves. The land was lush; the flowers grew everywhere. Leaves on trees were enormous! We traveled everywhere by river.

Visual Memories

Artist's Biography

Linda Dubin Garfield, an award-winning printmaker and mixed media artist, creates visual memoirs exploring the mystery of memory and the magic of place, using hand-pulled printmaking techniques, photography, collage and digital imaging. She also creates installations that include public participatory art, especially when she is exploring themes relating to women in today’s culture. In 2005 she founded ARTsisters, a group of professional artists who empower each other and their community through art. In 2007 she started smART business consulting, helping emerging artists reach their goals and their audience, providing consulting and coaching on the business side of art through individual, small groups, and workshop experiences as well as providing opportunities to exhibit work. Today she serves on several non-profit boards and appreciates her good fortune to be able to make art every chance she gets.

Artist's Statement

In the early 90’s, I took a printmaking course and fell in love with the process. Unlike other passionate relationships that fade with time, the passion and love I had for printmaking has only gotten more intense. Several years ago, I started exploring mixed media and have found that combining collage and monotype is another relationship that works for me. At times I also combine photography and digital imaging with my other techniques. The possibilities are exponential.

Nature nurtures and inspires me. I combine elements of nature, texture and design along with the magic of the press. I am intrigued by memory and what remains in our mind’s eye. My work reflects scenes from travel near and far. More than a report on how it was exactly, I am interested in my expressive and passionate response to the color and pattern of the landscape or image. Rather than representing every detail, I evoke the hidden and reveal the atmosphere, creating personal visual memoirs.

My focus on the process, not the outcome, frees me to be experimental. Following my passion and living my dream energize me to be productive and alive. I feel like I am now living out loud. I want to share that passion and joie de vivre with those seeing my work, triggering a memory or experience for the viewer.
