Artist's Statement

I have always loved stories. The time we take to talk and listen to one another is priceless. Sharing stories is how we learn grow and become better people. It is for this reason that I became a teacher. Telling the story of the past to kids and listening to their emerging stories is an incredible way to spend a life. The dynamics of storytelling affects every aspect of my work.

The beauty of ordinary objects and the past has always fascinated me. Yard sales, attics, garages and basements tell an intimate story of a person’s life. An object well made and well used exudes a dignity that I incorporate in my work to create new objects and new stories.

In both my assemblages and my guitars I use a found objects combined with my own paintings, drawings and prints to make objects with multiple purposes. The guitars are playable art pieces. I construct them to be played, and it is in their use that they become more beautiful. My other work is narrative. Look closely at the images, text and objects. Their intent is to tell a story, invite reminiscence and be enjoyed. Craft is the intersection between use and beauty. Within my work I hope to add a narrative dimension to that intersection. Telling stories, making art, and working with kids is an incredible way to spend a life.
