As part of IFPDA’s print month, we will present a conversation with artist Rebecca Gilbert and our Executive Director Liz Spungen, exploring Gilbert’s monumental project “A Dance of Death in Two Parts.” When complete, this ambitious endeavor will consist of 82 individual wood engravings in an edition of 82! Forty-one of the intimately scaled prints recreate the renowned Dance of Death series Hans Holbein the Younger published in 1538, with 41 corresponding prints of Gilbert’s own design. Her new compositions respond to the Holbein series with representations of the people, technology and culture of our time. An extremely skilled and accomplished printmaker, Gilbert’s practice exemplifies a dedication to traditional printmaking processes and how they can be employed to offer potent social commentary in a digital world.
