In 2019, local artist Philip Zuchman approached Studio 34 about doing a show in our space. Philip was incredibly prolific and not just as a painter: he made his own furniture, brewed his own wine, and fixed up and maintained every aspect of his home just two blocks down the street from Studio 34. We knew that whatever he was cooking up for a show, it was going to be incredible. But that show didn’t happen—the 2020 pandemic shut down our arts programming for nearly three years and then, suddenly and sadly, Philip died from pancreatic failure in 2021 at the age of 79.

Luckily, we were able to reconnect with Philip’s wife, Deborah Zuchman, also a painter and former art teacher with several books published that showcase her work. Deborah pulled together some 90 previously unexhibited works painted in oils and wax that she and Philip has rendered with knives instead of brushes. She titled the show Landscapes on the Edge of Abstraction in reference to work that lives on the line between the real and the imagined.

The show’s opening on April 5, 2024 was a great success, and there have since been many inquiries about the Zuchmans’ art. And so, for the closing, Deborah Zuchman will give an artist talk to discuss the work and answer questions. This will also be the public’s last chance to buy the Zuchmans’ paintings and Deborah’s book, Effectations, featuring 20 of her paintings set alongside poems by her son, Will Zuchman.

This closing event runs from 5pm-7pm on Sunday, June 9. Deborah’s talk will begin around 5:30. Art can be purchased by cash, check, Venmo (preferred), PayPal (not preferred), or CashApp. For inquiries, please contact Studio 34 Arts Curator, Morgan Andrews: morgan@studio34yoga.com
