Penland School of Craft offers intensive craft workshops of various lengths to serious makers of all skill levels. Workshops are led by visiting artist/instructors in a wide range of mediums and based on the idea that total-immersion education is a uniquely effective way of learning and that the workshop experience is enhanced by close interaction and shared knowledge. Workshops are open to serious students of all levels unless specified; beginners are welcome.
Penland has no standing faculty–instructors and students come to the school for the duration of their session. Students at Penland take only one workshop at a time, making it possible to cover a tremendous amount of material and to form close relationships with other students in a few weeks.
The variety of workshops offered is one of Penland’s great strengths. In addition to the array of media, Penland’s workshops range from broad introductory workshops to those covering a single technique. There are offerings for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students, with the bulk of the workshops welcoming all three.
The minimum age for Penland workshops is 18.
Penland’s scholarship program exists to make our workshops accessible to those who are not able to participate without financial assistance and to create educational opportunities for people who have been underrepresented at Penland and in the craft world.
