Installation/Mixed Media

Objects found, the discarded
are resurrected
as forms to be considered, to be reconstructed

things noticed from the periphery
are extracted directly from nature
or sidewalks

I have a penchant for elegance, a sense of order,
to investigate pattern and geometry
the essence of the natural state

it involves a process of subtraction
of stripping down to the thinnest layer
to be rebuilt, altered and situated

poised for reflection
or simply to notice

then again, continue to transform into further entities

Messages Series

Messages Series was produced during the summer of 2004 in New Mexico; each began with rubbings and digital photographs of insect infestation from the bark of a Pinon tree. Bark beetles are destroying these trees due to an extended drought throughout the Southwest. The patterns that are left on the interior of the bark are stunningly beautiful and suggest a form of language – communication. Several of the paintings include patterns generated by a scanned image of the human fingerprint. The painting of these combined patterns simulates the image of moving and spiraling water. In juxtaposing beauty with destruction, these pieces present thoughts about the cycle of nature and man’s influence on its course.

Arroyo Series

These small paintings on mylar offer a glimpse of my sense of place in nature. The series began with the observation of one specific pool of water. I was looking for a feminine form, a vessel shape, a passageway that drew a connection between nature and myself. Water and its surrounding landscape was the answer, and have been the catalysts for the work that I have produced over the past four years. No piece is a direct record or observation. Each is an impression and a response to the landscape.
