Artist Statement

Francis Beaty is an artist who works in a variety of media. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned. By taking daily life as subject matter she comments on everyday aesthetic. She involves the viewer in a way that is sometimes physical and believes in the idea of function following form in a work. Francis creates work with a clarity of content and an uncompromising attitude towards conceptual and minimal art. Her works are characterized using everyday objects in which recognition plays an important part. She creates environments that generate tranquil poetic images. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. With a subtle approach, Francis formalizes the coincidental and emphasizes the conscious process of composition that is behind the seemingly random work. The process is experimental, improvisational and intuitive. She attempts to capture a moment in time using discarded, underappreciated and unusual materials.

Artist Biography

Francis Beaty (b.1949, Abington, PA) is a contemporary installation artist, painter and sculptor known for her interdisciplinary work and introspective style. Beaty received a BA in French and Education from Wilkes University and later in life an AAS in Interior Design from Northampton Community College. Francis’s 30+ yr career in the design and building trades provided her with the framework and passion to build architecturally inspired installations. Her works incorporate found and constructed elements with a unique conceptual inventiveness. Beaty builds installations addressing issues that resonate with the public on social, economic and global concerns.

Beaty exhibits nationally and internationally. She is represented by the 10dence Platform in the Netherlands. She has participated in residencies in France, Japan, Newfoundland, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania. These residencies allow her to expand her vision while experiencing the multitude of artistic expression throughout the world. The act of leaving familiar surroundings for a new culture or environment is the spark that ignites her growth and self-discovery. Francis was awarded the Betsy Meyer Award in 2021 for her Installation “Fear and Hope with The NINE”. As a member of InLiquid Francis has participated in numerous exhibitions. Francis with her husband/ Technical Director moved her practice from Philadelphia (2025) to a spacious barn in farm country Lewisburg, PA to experience and respond with refreshed vision and expression.
