Artist's Biography

A native of Philadelphia, PA, Constance McBride relocated to the Southwest in 2002 and for 16 years, observations of the desert made a transformative impact on her professional practice as a research-based visual artist. Her work addresses the human condition in relation to nature while putting an emphasis on the issues most experienced by women. It has been supported by grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Phoenix Art Museum's Contemporary Forum, an award supported in part by the Nathan Cummings Foundation Endowment. Museum exhibitions include Udinotti Museum of Figurative Art and Phoenix Art Museum in AZ, Las Cruces Museum of Art in NM, San Angelo Museum of Art in TX, The State Museum of Pennsylvania and Biggs Museum of American Art in DE. Notable gallery exhibitions include Craft Forms at Wayne Art Center in Wayne, PA, The Clay Studio National in Philadelphia, PA, America's ClayFest International at Blue Line Arts in Roseville, CA, Beyond the Brickyard at Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, MT and several solo exhibitions in Phoenix, AZ. Her work is in public collections in Arizona and private collections across the USA. It has received attention from several publications including the international platform Ceramics Now, Yahoo News, Visual Art Source, Artblog, Schuylkill Valley Journal and Phoenix Magazine. Now living and working in Chester County, PA, her current affiliations include Main Line Art Center, Philadelphia Sculptors and Women's Caucus for Art/Philadelphia Chapter. McBride serves as a board member of The Art Trust in West Chester and teaches ceramics at Chester County Art Association and at Clay on Main in Oley, PA. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Arcadia University, Glenside, PA.

Artist's Statement

I work primarily with clay. It's made from minerals of the earth and it holds memories. It's malleable and I like to think we are too; not without conviction but flexible enough to ride the waves of change. I use porcelain, stoneware and paper clay, known for its versatility and adaptability during the building process. I hand build and slip dip pieces I create, and I slip dip bits of nature, found pieces of debris and fibrous objects. Many of the objects I use tend to hold meaning for me, like my grandmother's doilies or linens from my mother's closet. Sometimes other discarded objects and recycled metals make their way into a piece too.

I think about the layers we add to our lives while investigating the changes our bodies experience over time; layers of relationships we develop and discard and layers of lore ancestors leave behind for us to ponder. My crumpled figures may seem to be in ruins, yet they still exist. While we are fragile, there is a tenacity to survive.

Living in the Southwest desert made it an ever present influence on me. Cacti spines, tumbleweeds, branches and twigs were picked up and saved much like the bits I've been collecting from Northeastern woods, beaches and shorelines since childhood. These bits share aspects of us: both individually transient and collectively existing for thousands of years. Landforms are continually expanding, contracting, and redefining themselves; so are we. By using these bits and pieces, whether they are actually used in a piece or are my inspiration for a piece, I am attempting to suspend time, if only for a while.
