Artist's Statement

My abstract paintings are inspired by land forms, the shapes on this earth, whether observed from the air or the ground. I am especially fascinated by the views seen from an airplane - land and water with all the magnificent patterns and contours, both geometric and amorphous. But rather than illustrating an actual place, I strive to create work that is a compelling visual experience. I paint intuitively, which allows me to express a sense of something beyond the physical – something more emotional, yielding to the process to unearth the painting's potential. This improvisational exploration builds many layers of paint over line and texture with intriguing traces of what came before. Arshile Gorky said, “Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, . . . It is emancipation of the mind.” Without a reference based in reality, my art encourages the viewer to attain that same mental freedom.
