For Shaiken, the paradox of family is that its outer edges are often at its center—the way eldest and youngest generations can form the heart of family gatherings; or that quiet, shared moments around major milestones are often the ones that define a family.

Because her subject is that which holds and surrounds her, Shaiken has tasked herself with tender observation—finding family in every subject, from old family photographs to instruments at rest in the corner of a room.

Bookends will be on view in Gallery 1 from April 3 - April 19, 2025 with an opening reception on Saturday, April 5th from 4-7pm.
